What is Pilates?

German born physical therapist pioneer and athlete, Joseph H. Pilates (1881-1967) developed The Pilates Method in the 1920’s. Joseph Pilates was a sickly child and became determined to improve his physical condition, to gain strength and shield him from further health problems therefore which led him to devise a unique form of exercise integrating the mind and body in harmony.

During the latter part of the WW1, Joseph Pilates began working as an orderly at an infirmary with disabled patients, where he used his own body weight to mobilise their limbs and began to devise special equipment to aid their progress. This included attaching springs to their hospital beds offering gentle resistance to aid muscle strengthening and stretching. From these experiments the equipment that we use today was developed.

Pilates had a strong belief that habitual patterns of movement can cause imbalance and lead to injury, so he observed that links between the weak areas of the body and where it was over compensating. He then devised exercises based around re-educating and re-aligning the body creating balance and control involving concentration and co-ordination of breath and movement.
